How it works

Teach young players to hit the ball away from the coach/feeder to find open space.

What you need

  • foam tennis ball
  • junior racket
  • cones
  • mini court or service box

Your focus

Understanding that shots should go away from the opponent is the foundation of point construction. Aiming at a target rather than just over the net builds directional awareness early. Using a mini court keeps rallies manageable and builds confidence.

1

Set up two cones on opposite sides of a service-box-size court as targets.

2

Coach hand-feeds a ball to the player standing at the center baseline.

3

Player hits the ball toward whichever cone is farther from the coach.

4

Repeat 10 times, alternating which side the coach stands on so the open target changes each rally.

Goal

You've got it when you hit the ball away from the coach and feel the space you created, you're already thinking about where the open court is.

Helpful cues

  • Hit away from me!
  • Find the empty space.
  • Pick your cone before you swing.

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Use a balloon or foam ball and a wider target cone to make aiming simpler.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Coach moves after the feed, forcing the player to read and adjust the target mid-swing.
