How it works

Execute trained rally patterns against an opponent who is also using pre-assigned patterns, developing adaptability within structure.

What you need

  • tennis balls
  • tennis racket
  • full court
  • scoreboard or score tracker

Your focus

Advanced players must apply practiced patterns against real opposition that is actively disrupting their plan. Competing pattern versus pattern forces players to stay committed to their construction plan while reading and adjusting to the opponent's intentions. Tracking results by pattern rather than just score teaches evidence-based tactical awareness.

1

Assign each player a specific pattern (e.g., Player A: cross-court then inside-out forehand; Player B: slice wide then down-the-line).

2

Play out 15-ball points starting from a coach feed; both players must attempt their assigned pattern.

3

Award 1 point for winning the rally AND successfully executing at least two shots of the assigned pattern.

4

After 10 points, switch patterns and play another 10; debrief which pattern generated more winners and why.

Goal

It's real when you adapt your pattern mid-point because your opponent adjusted, you're not locked in, you're responding and staying in control.

Helpful cues

  • Stick to your pattern, force it.
  • If the pattern breaks, reset and look for it again.
  • Track which of your shots created the opening.

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Allow players to choose freely after the first two pattern shots are completed.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Mid-set, coach calls 'pattern switch' and players must immediately adopt the opponent's original pattern.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
