Your focus
High net clearance with topspin is the foundation of consistent high-level rallying, giving players safety margin while keeping the ball deep. Players who rely on flat balls have little margin for error; topspin allows aggressive hitting with built-in consistency. Training topspin through deliberate brushing technique creates a reliable shot under pressure.
Players rally crosscourt from the baseline focusing exclusively on topspin technique: low-to-high swing path, wrist laid back at preparation, rapid acceleration through contact.
Set a net clearance goal of at least one meter above the net tape; a cone placed on top of the net can serve as a reference point.
Count 15-ball rallies where every ball clears the cone height and lands behind the service line.
Alternate forehand and backhand crosscourt sets; debrief swing path and wrist position after each set.
Goal
You're there when your topspin shots consistently clear the net by 2-3 feet and still land inside the baseline, height and depth together.
Helpful cues
- Brush up the back of the ball, not through it
- Finish high over your shoulder
- Slow preparation, fast contact zone
