Your focus
Changing direction from crosscourt to down-the-line is one of the most tactically important skills in rallying, requiring both footwork and racket-face adjustment. Players who can only rally crosscourt are predictable; adding the down-the-line option creates tactical variety. This pattern also teaches players to read pace and adjust position for direction change.
Coach feeds a deep crosscourt ball to the player's forehand.
Player takes the ball early (inside the baseline if possible) and redirects it down the line to the opposite corner.
After the down-the-line shot, player recovers to center and prepares for the next feed.
Alternate: three crosscourt rallies with partner, then player changes direction down the line on the fourth ball; partner defends.
Goal
Success is landing 3 down-the-line balls in a row after feeding from crosscourt, your feet and swing adjust before the ball gets there.
Helpful cues
- Open your hips to aim down the line
- Contact the ball slightly in front for inside-out direction
- Watch the ball, then decide to redirect
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Coach feeds a ball directly to the down-the-line position so the player only needs to direct, not redirect.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Partner knows the player will go down the line and defends it; player must add pace or angle to win the point. No account needed
