How it works

Teach players a simple three-step routine to clear distractions and refocus attention between every point.

What you need

  • tennis racket
  • tennis balls
  • court

Your focus

Young players often carry the emotional weight of the previous point into the next one, leading to compounding errors. A consistent reset routine creates a mental boundary that separates each point as its own event. Practicing the routine in drill settings automates it so it activates reliably under match pressure.

1

Coach explains and demonstrates a three-step reset: (a) turn away from the net and take one deep breath, (b) bounce the ball three times while looking down at the strings, (c) look up and say a personal focus word quietly before the next point.

2

Players practice the routine without a ball first, simply walking through each step on command.

3

Run a short practice set where after every point, both players must complete their full reset routine before the next serve.

4

Coach pauses play to praise players who complete the full routine even after winning or losing a tough point.

Helpful cues

  • Leave the last point behind you
  • Three bounces, one breath
  • Your focus word is your switch

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Use only the breath step; add the bounce and focus word once the breathing habit is established.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Coach introduces a deliberate distraction (drops a ball, makes a noise) during the routine and the player must maintain focus.
