How it works

Build composure when facing or serving match point by repeatedly simulating the exact scenario in practice until the emotional response is controlled and predictable.

What you need

  • tennis racket
  • tennis balls
  • court

Your focus

Match points are the single most anxiety-producing moments in tennis, and players who have practiced them dozens of times in training approach them as familiar territory rather than novel threats. Repeated simulation reduces the amygdala's threat response, allowing the pre-frontal cortex (decision-making) to stay in control. Tracking composure self-ratings across sessions creates visible progress that builds confidence.

1

Coach sets the score at match point, both serving match point and facing match point, and announces the scenario specifically ('You are serving for the match at 5-4, 40-30 in the third').

2

Player performs full pre-point routine before the coach feeds the serve return or player serves.

3

Play the point out fully regardless of outcome; after the point, player rates composure 1-5 and coach rates it independently.

4

Compare ratings and discuss discrepancies; complete 10 match-point simulations of each type per session.

Goal

You've got it when your breathing is controlled and your shot quality stays the same whether you're serving for the match or facing it, same routine, same execution.

Helpful cues

  • Match point is just another point, your routine doesn't change
  • Compare your composure rating to your coach's, the gap is your growth area
  • The more match points you face in practice, the smaller they feel in tournaments

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Start with 'game point' scenarios rather than 'match point' to reduce psychological stakes while still training the skill.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Chain match-point scenarios: player must successfully navigate three consecutive match points (serving and receiving) before the drill is complete.
