How it works
Develop composure after errors by training a consistent emotional reset, positive body language, reset routine, and immediate refocus, that prevents error chains in matches.
What you need
- tennis racket
- tennis balls
- court
Your focus
Double faults and unforced errors become chains when the player allows one mistake to affect their body language and confidence for the next point. Training a concrete reset response after every error interrupts the chain before it starts. Players who recover quickly from errors win more close matches because they minimize the snowball effect of mistakes.
Coach designs a three-step reset: (1) walk away from the end line, turn your back, (2) positive self-talk ('I've hit that shot a thousand times'), (3) return to the end line and start pre-point routine.
Player and coach play a game to 7 points; coach intentionally creates pressure balls likely to produce errors.
Whenever the player makes an unforced error, they must complete all three reset steps before receiving the next ball.
Coach awards a 'composure point' for every error that is immediately followed by the full reset; player tracks their composure points versus lost points from errors.
Helpful cues
- Turn your back on the error, literally walk away from it
- Talk to yourself like you'd talk to your best friend after a mistake
- The quality of your reset determines the quality of your next shot
