How it works

Develop a structured changeover routine that allows players to fully reset tactically and emotionally after dropping a set.

What you need

  • tennis racket
  • tennis balls
  • court

Your focus

Many juniors lose the first game of the second set still playing in the emotional aftermath of losing the first set. A structured three-step changeover protocol (physical, tactical, mental) interrupts this cycle. Consistent use of the protocol in practice transfers directly to match performance.

1

After completing the first set (which coach intentionally ensures the player loses by feeding easy balls to the opponent in the final games), the player sits at the changeover chair.

2

The player completes three steps in 90 seconds: (a) physical, drink water and take three slow breaths; (b) tactical, state one adjustment they will make in the next set; (c) mental, repeat a personal cue phrase aloud (e.g., 'Fresh start').

3

Player walks purposefully to the end line, bounces on their toes, and plays the first two games of the second set immediately.

4

Coach evaluates whether the player's body language and shot selection reflect the stated adjustment; debrief after the second set.

Helpful cues

  • Own the changeover, it's your time!
  • What are you changing? Say it!
  • Walk out there like you already won.

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach provides the tactical adjustment for the player so they only need to practice the physical and mental steps.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Simulate a crowd by having other players watch and comment during the changeover to increase social pressure.

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
