How it works

Introduce competitive match-play scenarios in a fun, low-pressure mini-court format where young players compete for points using underhand feeds.

What you need

  • tennis racket
  • tennis balls
  • court
  • cones

Your focus

Young players develop their compete level only through actual point play, not just drilling, so starting competition early in a low-pressure format is essential. Mini-court shrinks the target area so beginners experience rally success, keeping engagement high. Tracking a score , even a simple one , introduces the fundamental competition concept that every point matters.

1

Two players face each other across the service line on a mini-court (service boxes only) using foam balls.

2

Coach or player feeds an underhand serve to start each point; rally continues until one player wins the point.

3

Players keep score; first to 7 points wins the game; play best of three games.

4

After each game, both players shake hands and say one positive thing about the other's play before starting the next game.

Goal

You've got it when you're trying to win every point, not just hitting the ball, you celebrate the wins and shake off the losses like a competitor.

Helpful cues

  • Every point counts, try your best on all of them
  • Win or lose the point, be ready for the next one
  • Tennis is a game, compete hard and have fun at the same time

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Remove scoring and play cooperative rallies, counting how many shots they can hit in a row before introducing points.

Add the next challenge

Add a specific game situation: player must start each point with a specific shot type (e.g., crosscourt only) to add a tactical layer.
