How it works

Switch the point of attack with a long, accurate passing switch while defenders shift to press.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball
  • scrimmage vests

Your focus

Switching play is a core possession tactic that exploits defensive overloads. Teaching the technique and timing of switching passes , including reading when the switch is on , develops the tactical passing range that elevates team play.

1

Set up 4v2 overload on the left side of a 40x25 yard grid.

2

Possession team circulates on the left side. Two players are positioned wide right.

3

As defenders press on the left, the player in possession looks to switch to the right.

4

Switch pass must travel 25+ yards accurately to the far side player.

5

Award 2 points for a successful switch that finds a player in space.

6

Defenders may try to intercept; successful interceptions earn their own point.

Goal

Success is the switch arriving flat and fast to the far-side player's feet while under pressure, not ballooning over the top, not scuffed short.

Helpful cues

  • Look across the field before you receive, know if the switch is on
  • Use laces for long balls, inside foot loses accuracy over distance
  • The switch works because defenders can't shift fast enough, play it early

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Defenders are passive, just practice the technique of the long pass.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge
