Your focus
Mindset development in young athletes begins with language. Teaching players to replace 'I can't' with 'I can't yet' creates the linguistic foundation for a growth mindset , one of the most powerful predictors of long-term athletic development.
Before the activity, teach three growth-mindset phrases: 'I can't yet,' 'I'll try again,' 'That was hard, good.'
Players move with the ball through a challenging slalom course designed to be difficult.
Whenever a player says 'I can't' or expresses a fixed statement, coach gently offers the growth alternative.
Player repeats the growth phrase, then tries the move again.
Award a star for every player who uses a growth phrase unprompted.
End session by sharing one growth statement each player made.
Helpful cues
- 'I can't' means you haven't yet, add the word 'yet'
- Hard is good, that's where learning happens
- Every great player said 'I can't' first, then kept going
