How it works

Attempt difficult technical challenges intentionally, tracking improvement over multiple failures to build a failure-positive mindset.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball
  • goals

Your focus

A failure-positive mindset treats mistakes as information rather than judgment. By deliberately setting tasks that produce failure and then measuring improvement across attempts, players learn that failure is the mechanism of progress , not its enemy.

1

Set up 3 technically difficult challenges: weak foot shot from 18 yards, inside-foot chip over a cone, scissors fake past a passive defender.

2

Each player attempts each challenge 5 times. Track successes on round 1.

3

Allow 3 minutes of focused practice on each challenge.

4

Attempt each challenge 5 more times. Compare success rates.

5

Debrief: how much did you improve? What failure taught you the most?

6

Players write down one thing each failure taught them.

Helpful cues

  • A failure with attention is worth more than a success with laziness
  • What did that failure tell you to adjust?
  • Your improvement is the proof that failure works

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Use easier challenges with a high base success rate so improvement is visible.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Challenges get harder each round, players always stay at their failure edge.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
