How it works

Pass to players in a specific numbered sequence while playing in a live possession game.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball
  • scrimmage vests

Your focus

Maintaining a mental sequence while also performing physical soccer tasks directly trains dual-task focus , the ability to hold a cognitive task in working memory while executing physical skills. This mirrors the tactical awareness demands of match play.

1

Number players 1-5 in each team. Possession game in a bounded space.

2

Each team must pass in numbered order: 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 to 5 to 1, and so on.

3

If the sequence is broken, the other team gets the ball.

4

Defenders play normally, they don't know the sequence.

5

Play for 6 minutes.

6

Debrief: what helped you remember whose turn it was?

Helpful cues

  • Know who you're passing TO while you still have the ball
  • Stay focused on the sequence, the game is the distraction
  • Scanning helps: see where your next target is before you receive
