How it works

Dribble while solving a simple mental challenge (counting backwards, math problems) to train split focus.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball

Your focus

In matches, players must dribble while simultaneously reading the field , a cognitive dual-task. Training explicit dual-task performance (dribble + mental challenge) builds the attentional capacity to handle both physical and tactical demands simultaneously.

1

Player dribbles through a simple 8-cone course.

2

While dribbling, coach calls out a math problem: '7 plus 8?' or 'Count backwards from 20.'

3

Player must answer correctly while maintaining control through the course.

4

Wrong answers or lost ball require a restart at the beginning.

5

Successful completions are timed.

6

Repeat 8 times with different questions each run.

Goal

It's working when you finish the mental challenge without losing the ball, keeping the dribble alive while solving the problem means both channels are running at once.

Helpful cues

  • Don't stop dribbling to think, thinking happens while your feet keep moving
  • The ball becomes automatic when your mind is sharp, trust your feet
  • Eyes up helps both the dribbling and the focus

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back
