Your focus
Metacognitive awareness , knowing when your focus lapses and why , is the advanced form of focus development. Analyzing focus errors in video and then immediately correcting them in live play creates the self-regulation skill that elite players use throughout their careers.
Before practice, show a 3-minute clip of a game where a key error resulted from a focus lapse (wrong position, wrong marking).
Ask players individually: 'When did they lose focus? What were they watching instead?'
Each player writes their answer.
Discuss answers as a group.
Run a 10-minute scrimmage with the specific focus demand from the clip as the challenge.
Debrief: did any player replicate the focus lapse from the video?
Helpful cues
- Focus lapses are usually caused by watching the ball when you should be watching your player
- Where should your eyes be right now?, ask yourself every 30 seconds
- Great defenders are always 'searching', never settled on one thing
