How it works

Pass to one target, scan while ball travels, and make a second decision based on what the scan reveals.

What you need

  • 3 cones
  • ball
  • rebounder or wall

Your focus

Scanning while the ball is traveling is a foundation of intelligent soccer play. This drill trains the habit of using the time the ball is in flight to process information and pre-decide the next action.

1

Set 3 cones in a triangle: cone A (ball start), cone B (forward), cone C (side).

2

Pass to a rebounder at cone B. While the ball travels and returns, scan left and right.

3

If parent holds up LEFT hand, first touch to cone C left. If RIGHT, first touch to cone C right. If neither, play back to B.

4

React based solely on what you saw during the scan.

5

Complete 15 reps.

Goal

You've got it when you make the correct touch decision on 12 of 15 reps based on what you scanned.

Helpful cues

  • Scan as soon as your foot leaves the ball
  • Your decision should be made before the ball returns
  • Soft first touch, give yourself space to play the decision

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Parent gives the call just before the ball arrives, reduces scan urgency.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a 3-second time limit after the first touch, must play the ball again before time expires.
