How it works

Dribble through a cone grid while responding to color/number calls from a parent, training eyes-up peripheral awareness.

What you need

  • 6 cones (2 colors)
  • ball

Your focus

Dribbling with your head down turns your peripheral vision off. This drill forces you to dribble by feel while simultaneously processing information around you , exactly what playing with vision requires.

1

Set 6 cones in a 5x5 yard grid, 3 one color, 3 another.

2

Dribble freely through the grid while keeping your head up.

3

Parent calls a color (or number) at random. Sprint to touch that cone with your foot without losing the ball.

4

Return to dribbling as soon as you touch the cone.

5

Complete 3 minutes of continuous play.

Goal

You've got it when you touch the correct cone on 10 of 12 calls without losing possession.

Helpful cues

  • Ball stays within 1 step, tight touch, loose feet
  • Head up between the calls, be scanning always
  • Don't stop after touching the cone, keep moving immediately

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Parent makes calls every 10 seconds, gives time to find the cone.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Parent calls two colors in sequence, touch both before the next call.
