How it works

Build the habit of checking over both shoulders before receiving the ball.

What you need

  • 2 cones
  • ball
  • wall or rebounder

Your focus

Top-level players check their shoulders 1-2 times before every touch. Scanning before the ball arrives means your first touch goes away from pressure , not into it.

1

Stand 8 yards from a wall with two cones set 3 yards behind you on either side.

2

Kick the ball against the wall.

3

While the ball returns, check over both shoulders (left then right), notice which cone is uncovered.

4

Control the ball and take a first touch toward the open cone.

5

Repeat 15 reps, tracking how often your first touch goes to the correct open side.

Goal

You've got it when your first touch goes to the correct open side on 12 of 15 reps.

Helpful cues

  • Scan while the ball is traveling, not after it arrives
  • Quick scan: one look left, one look right, done
  • First touch toward the open side, every time

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Have a partner stand at one cone so you always know which side is blocked.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Partner moves between cones while ball is in flight, must scan and adjust each rep.

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
