How it works
Sprint to reach a loose ball before an opponent and finish on goal, building maximum effort habits.
What you need
- cones
- soccer ball
- mini goals
Your focus
Teaching young players to sprint to every loose ball builds the effort habit that becomes automatic over time. Competitions over 50-50 balls reward maximum effort with tangible outcomes, making effort feel meaningful and worth repeating.
Two players stand back-to-back in the center. A mini goal at each end, 8 yards away.
Coach rolls a ball out to one side.
Both players sprint around their designated cone and race to the ball.
First player to the ball attacks; other defends.
Play until a goal is scored or ball goes out.
10 rounds per pair; track wins.
Goal
You've got it when you sprint to every ball from the first rep to the last, not jogging and then accelerating when you think you might win it.
Helpful cues
- SPRINT to every ball, never walk to a loose ball
- The player who wants it more wins it more
- Even if you get there second, keep your effort up
