How it works

Complete a dribbling task while teammates try to distract and create noise around the player.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball

Your focus

Composure under external pressure starts with simple exposure to controlled chaos. Teaching young players to focus on their task when noise and distraction surround them builds the emotional regulation habit that serves them throughout their career.

1

Mark a 10-yard dribbling lane with cones.

2

One player dribbles through the lane while others stand on the outside making noise.

3

Player must complete the slalom and score through a mini goal at the end.

4

Coach evaluates whether player slowed down, rushed, or lost control under noise.

5

Debrief: 'What helped you stay calm?'

6

Every player gets 3 turns.

Goal

You've got it when the noise and pressure around you disappear and you finish the dribble clean, same focus whether it's quiet or chaos.

Helpful cues

  • Focus on the ball and the path, everything else is noise
  • Slow your breathing if you feel rushed
  • Take your time, composure means going at YOUR pace, not theirs

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

No noise from teammates, just the player and the course.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Teammates stand closer and can try to lightly distract (no contact) at the goal.
