Your focus
The most common composure failure in youth soccer is rushing a shot when a defender approaches. This drill specifically trains the habit of setting up the shot correctly despite pressure , building the calm that produces better finishing decisions.
Player starts 25 yards from goal. A defender starts 5 yards behind them.
Coach plays the ball into space in front of the player.
Player runs onto ball; defender chases.
Player must choose: shoot early with power, take one extra touch, or cut inside.
Goalkeeper in goal. Award points for goals only, no credit for 'almost.'
Repeat 10 times; track goal conversion rate.
Goal
Success is taking the shot even with the defender right behind you, not stopping, not slowing down. Clean finish under real pressure.
Helpful cues
- Don't look back, know where the defender is before you get the ball
- Decide before you arrive, change your mind with your first touch
- Breathe out as you shoot, tension kills accuracy
