Your focus
Building out from the back under pressure is the composure test for defenders and midfielders. Players who panic when pressed give the ball away and invite attacks. Training composure in this specific context is essential for modern possession-based systems.
Set up a GK + 4 defenders vs. 3 high forwards in the defensive third.
Goalkeeper distributes; back four must play out past the halfway line.
Forwards press immediately and intensely for 10 seconds.
If the ball is played long past halfway, 1 point for the defensive team.
If the press wins the ball in a dangerous area, 1 point for the forwards.
Run 15 sequences; evaluate composure, not just outcome.
Helpful cues
- First option is always the safe option, never force it
- If pressed, go back; if they drop, go forward, read and react
- Body language: upright and calm communicates control to your teammates
