Communication & Teamwork

How it works

Work together as a team to collect cones while dribbling, combining communication with cooperative play.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball

Your focus

Teamwork at young ages is built through shared goals and simple coordination tasks. When players must talk to each other to achieve a group outcome, they learn that individual skill combined with teamwork produces better results than individual effort alone.

1

Scatter 20 cones around a bounded space. Split into 2 teams of 4.

2

Each player dribbles a ball. Teams compete to collect the most cones.

3

To collect a cone, a player must stop their ball on the cone.

4

Players can also 'steal' cones another team has collected from a central base.

5

Team must call out when they find a cone and when they need help defending their base.

6

3-minute rounds; team with most cones wins.

Helpful cues

  • Tell your team where you're going so you don't overlap
  • Call for help when someone is stealing your cones
  • Work together, spread out to cover more ground

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

No stealing; just collect, reduces the need for defensive communication.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Players must pass the ball (not dribble) to reach each cone.

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
