How it works
Coordinate a team pressing trap using verbal triggers to cut off passing lanes and win the ball high.
What you need
- cones
- soccer ball
- scrimmage vests
- goals
Your focus
A coordinated press is entirely dependent on communication , one player calls the trigger, and the whole team responds simultaneously. Training this communication sequence develops the elite teamwork needed for modern high-intensity pressing systems.
Set up small-sided activity on a bounded space with goals.
One team practices a high press. Designate a press trigger player (usually a forward).
The trigger player calls 'press!' when the opposition's center back receives the ball.
On 'press,' all teammates must immediately close their assigned opponent.
If the team wins possession within 5 seconds of the trigger call, award 2 points.
Play 20 minutes; evaluate how many successful coordinated presses occurred.
Helpful cues
- Trigger player: call it loud and commit, half-pressing is worse than not pressing
- Everyone else: you must close instantly, a slow reaction breaks the whole trap
- Cover the passing lane, not just your player
