Underdog Challenge

Attitude

11 minutesadvancedteammental

Legend

  • six-player underdog team
  • five-player stronger team
  • ball

How it works

Demonstrate sustained positive attitude and competitive drive when playing against a stronger team under handicap conditions.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball
  • scrimmage vests
  • goals

Your focus

The underdog mindset , staying positive, adapting, fighting for every ball despite disadvantage , is one of the most valuable attitudes in competitive sports. This drill manufactures adversity so players can develop and demonstrate that quality.

1

Coach deliberately creates uneven teams (stronger players vs. weaker players) for a full 20-minute game.

2

Stronger team starts with a 2-goal lead.

3

Underdog team gets a one-player advantage (small-sided activity) to give them a fighting chance.

4

Underdog team selects a 'belief word' before the start that they shout together.

5

Award bonus points for goals scored from comebacks, not just final score.

6

Post-game: underdog team reflects on their attitude and identifies moments where it helped them.

Helpful cues

  • Belief is a decision you make before you start
  • Process over scoreboard, focus on the next ball
  • Every player on the underdog team must be loud and visible

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Underdog starts down only 1 goal; teams are more evenly matched.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge
