Your focus
A positive team attitude is built through conscious practice, not just instruction. Rewarding encouragement during competition makes it habitual and shows players that attitude directly contributes to team success.
Split into two teams of 4-5 in a bounded space.
Play a small-sided game (small-sided activity).
Introduce a second scoring system: any player who loudly encourages a teammate after a mistake earns a bonus point for their team.
Coach tracks both goal-scoring points and attitude points on a visible board.
At the midpoint, review the totals and discuss what positive encouragement sounded like.
Final score combines both categories.
Helpful cues
- Be specific, 'Great try!' is better than just cheering
- Look at your teammate when you encourage them
