How it works

Combine speed ladder footwork drills with an immediate dribble sprint to build integrated soccer athleticism.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball
  • agility ladder

Your focus

Soccer requires rapid transitions between fine foot movements and explosive sprinting. Chaining a ladder drill to an immediate ball sprint trains this neurological transition and improves foot speed for in-game situations.

1

Place an agility ladder on the ground; set a ball 2 yards beyond the end.

2

Player completes a two-in, two-out ladder pattern through all rungs.

3

Immediately upon exiting, sprint to the ball.

4

Collect the ball and dribble at speed to a cone 20 yards away.

5

Rest 45 seconds. Repeat with a different ladder pattern (single foot, lateral, etc.).

6

Complete 6 total runs.

Goal

It's working when you exit the ladder clean and hit the first dribble touch immediately, no stutter step, just smooth movement into speed.

Helpful cues

  • Quick feet in the ladder, don't slow your momentum
  • Don't stop when you exit, explode to the ball
  • First touch out of the sprint should set your direction

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Skip the ladder; just sprint to the ball and dribble.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Coach points left or right as player exits ladder, they must dribble that direction first.
