How it works
Run with the ball and tag teammates to develop basic athletic movement patterns in a fun game context.
What you need
- cones
- soccer ball
- scrimmage vests
Your focus
Tag games build fundamental movement skills , running, dodging, stopping , in an environment that doesn't feel like exercise. Combining the ball with movement builds early athleticism specific to soccer.
Mark a 20x20 yard area with cones.
All players have a ball except 2 taggers who wear vests.
Taggers chase and try to touch a dribbling player; tagged players freeze.
Frozen players can be freed when another dribbling player passes the ball through their legs.
Play for 2 minutes, then switch taggers.
Repeat 3 rounds.
Goal
You're doing it right when you're the one doing the chasing, not being chased, moving fast, keeping your ball, and tagging teammates before they tag you.
Helpful cues
- Keep your head up to see the taggers
- Change direction to dodge
- Stay on the balls of your feet
