How it works

Mirror a partner's lateral movements in real time to train reactive footwork, defensive positioning, and hip mobility.

What you need

  • cones

Your focus

Defensive footwork is the hardest thing to train in isolation because it has no set pattern , it's always a response to another person. The mirror drill puts athletes into exactly that situation: they have to read hips, anticipate direction, and move before the decision is made. Over time this builds the reactive defensive posture that defines great defenders in every sport.

1

Two athletes stand 3 yards apart, facing each other.

2

Place 2 cones 5 yards to the left and right of both athletes.

3

One athlete is the 'Mover', they shuffle left and right within the cone boundary.

4

The other is the 'Mirror', they match every movement in real time, staying directly in front of the Mover.

5

Go for 10 seconds. Score 1 point for the Mover each time they get past the Mirror.

6

Switch roles. 4 rounds each, rest 30 seconds between rounds.

7

Mover can also stop, fake, and change rhythm.

Goal

You've got it when you stay in front of your partner for the full 10 seconds without crossing your feet or losing your stance.

Helpful cues

  • Mirror: watch the mover's belly button, not their feet or eyes
  • Stay in a low defensive stance, the moment you stand up, you lose
  • Small steps, not big lunges, stay balanced so you can change again
  • Mirror: slide your feet, don't cross them

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Reduce the zone to 3 yards, less ground to cover.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a forward-and-back dimension, mover can also step forward to 'pressure' the mirror.
