Team Positioning Drill

Positioning

Legend

  • six attackers
  • six defenders
  • coach
  • ball
  • scrimmage pass

How it works

Maintain correct team offensive and defensive positioning through a 6v6 scrimmage with freeze evaluations.

What you need

  • lacrosse stick
  • lacrosse ball
  • cones
  • goal
  • pinnies

Your focus

Positioning is a full-team discipline. Freeze evaluations in scrimmage expose collective positioning failures and force teams to discuss and correct their spatial habits in real time. This is the highest form of positional training.

1

6v6 scrimmage with coach calling 'freeze!' at regular intervals.

2

On each freeze, every player evaluates their own position: are they in the right spot for this situation?

3

Players who are out of position must step 5 yards to where they should be and explain why.

4

Coach scores each freeze: how many players out of 12 were correctly positioned? Track improvement.

Goal

It's clicking when the freeze evaluation shows everyone in a correct position, and you can explain why you're there, not just that you ended up there.

Helpful cues

  • Positioning is active, not passive, you must constantly readjust
  • When you see a freeze coming, make sure you're where you should be, don't wait to be caught
  • The goal is 12 out of 12 correctly positioned, start demanding that from yourself

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Evaluate only the offense or only the defense per freeze.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Coach does not call the freeze; players self-freeze when they believe positioning is perfect.
