How it works

Maintain correct crease defensive position, between the crease attacker and the ball, through multiple ball rotations.

What you need

  • lacrosse stick
  • lacrosse ball
  • cones
  • goal

Your focus

The crease defender has one of the most positionally demanding jobs in lacrosse. They must constantly balance guarding the crease attacker and being available for a slide. Training this positioning in isolation before live play prevents the most common defensive breakdowns.

1

Crease attacker stands in the crease. Crease defender positions between them and the ball.

2

Ball carrier passes around a triangle outside. Crease defender must adjust position on every pass.

3

After 5 ball rotations, ball carrier attacks the crease; crease defender must be in position to defend.

4

Run 4 full rotation cycles.

Goal

Success is maintaining correct crease position through the full rotation, between your assignment and the ball every single time, not just when it's easy.

Helpful cues

  • Draw a line between the ball and the crease attacker, you live on that line
  • Move before the pass, not after it, anticipate
  • Your lead foot points toward the ball; your body blocks the crease attacker from receiving

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Ball moves only between two positions; crease defender adjusts to one change at a time.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a second crease attacker; crease defender must guard both and communicate with teammates.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
