Off-Ball Motion
Off-Ball Movement
Legend
- six attackers
- six defenders
- ball
- continuous off-ball cuts
- pass
How it works

What you need
- lacrosse stick
- lacrosse ball
- cones
- goal
- pinnies
Your focus
Teams where all players move off-ball on every pass create continuous defensive stress. Training the habit of purposeful movement on every pass , not just when the ball is coming to you , is the hallmark of advanced team offense.
6v6 offense-only motion drill (no defense yet). Every time a pass is made, all five off-ball players make a purposeful movement: V-cut, fade, screen, or cut.
No player can stand still for longer than 2 seconds without moving.
Coach calls 'freeze!' at random moments; every player must be in a purposeful position.
Add defense after 5 minutes of clean motion.
Goal
It's clicking when every player without the ball has moved purposefully on every pass, no standing, no drifting. Five players in motion on every possession.
Helpful cues
- If you're standing still, you're helping the defense
- Every pass is your cue to move, before the ball arrives, not after
- Off-ball motion is offense for everyone, not just the ball carrier
