Cut to the Cone
Off-Ball Movement
Legend
- ball carrier
- two cutters
- four cones, one open
- ball pass
- cut route
How it works
Learn to time a cut to an open cone and receive a pass as a basic introduction to off-ball movement.
What you need
- lacrosse stick
- lacrosse ball
- cones
Your focus
Young players default to standing still when they don't have the ball. Teaching purposeful movement to an open spot builds the off-ball instincts that make teams dangerous and create scoring opportunities.
Set 4 cones in a square, 8 yards apart.
Ball carrier stands at one cone. Two cutters start at adjacent cones.
On 'go,' one cutter sprints to the empty cone and calls for the ball.
Ball carrier passes to the cutting player. Rotate after each pass. Complete 3 rounds.
Goal
You've got it when you arrive at the cone at the same time as the pass, not waiting at the cone, not still running when you catch it.
Helpful cues
- Cut to the empty space, never cut into a teammate or defender
- Show your stick when you want the ball
- Sprint the cut, jogging isn't cutting
