Transition Gate

Ground Balls & Transition

Legend

How it works

Execute the full transition sequence from a contested ground ball through a fast break to a shot within 8 seconds.

What you need

  • lacrosse stick
  • lacrosse ball
  • cones
  • goal
  • pinnies

Your focus

Transition effectiveness is measured in seconds. Teams that convert ground ball wins into shots within 8 seconds before the defense can set give up far fewer transition opportunities. The 8-second window creates urgency that mirrors real game demands.

1

Three offensive players and two defenders compete for a ground ball at midfield.

2

If offense wins, an 8-second clock starts. They must get a shot on goal before the clock expires.

3

If defense wins, they clear to midfield and earn a point.

4

Run 10 reps. Track how many transition shots come within the 8-second window.

Goal

You're there when the full sequence, ground ball win, outlet, fast break, shot, happens within 8 seconds. That's the standard. Time it.

Helpful cues

  • Clock starts the moment the ball is scooped, every second counts
  • Two passes maximum before the shot, no overhandling in transition
  • All three offensive players must sprint immediately, don't wait to see who wins the ground ball

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Extend window to 12 seconds; defenders close more slowly.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Reduce window to 6 seconds; add a third defender who releases from the crease.
