Eyes-Up Wall Ball
Field Vision
Legend
- player
- wall
- three numbered cones
- ball pass
How it works
Throw against a wall and look away to a target cone before the ball returns, training yourself to see the field instead of watching the ball.
What you need
- lacrosse stick
- lacrosse ball
- wall
- cones
Your focus
Staring at the ball is the number-one bad habit for young players. Forcing your eyes to a target cone the moment after you throw trains the scan habit that elite players use to find open teammates before the catch.
Set 3 cones in a fan shape 5 feet to your left and right of your throwing position. Number them 1, 2, 3.
Stand 5 feet from the wall. Throw the ball at the wall.
The moment the ball leaves your stick, look at cone 1. Hold your eyes there until the ball is almost back.
Catch the ball. Throw again, this time look at cone 2. Alternate through all 3 cones.
Do 10 reps per hand. Progress by increasing distance from the wall to 8 feet as you improve.
Goal
You've got it when you can make the catch and look to the target cone before the ball hits the wall and comes back, your eyes are already moving, not waiting.
Helpful cues
- Eyes off the wall the moment you release
- Find the cone before the ball comes back
- Soft hands on the catch, you haven't been watching it
