How it works

Identify and run the correct clear lane based on defensive cone positions.

What you need

  • cones
  • lacrosse stick
  • lacrosse ball

Your focus

Clearing in lacrosse requires the ball carrier to read the defensive formation and identify the open lane , under pressure, in motion. This drill trains that read in a low-stakes, repeatable way.

1

Parent sets 3 defensive cones in different blocking positions each rep.

2

Player studies the formation for 2 seconds.

3

Player runs the open clear lane, the gap between defensive positions.

4

Parent confirms if the correct lane was taken.

5

8 reps. Mix which lane is open. Final 2 reps: run at full speed.

Goal

You've got it when you identify and run the correct open lane on 7 of 8 reps, confirmed by your partner.

Helpful cues

  • Scan the cones before you start running, make the decision first
  • Commit to the lane, don't change direction halfway through
  • Run through the lane, not to the edge of it

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Parent sets the same formation for 3 consecutive reps so you can build the read.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Parent shifts one cone just before you start, forces a fast re-read.
