How it works

Demonstrate elite field vision by calling out all 11 other players' positions before a possession starts.

What you need

  • lacrosse stick
  • lacrosse ball
  • cones
  • goal
  • pinnies

Your focus

Elite quarterbacks know where every player is before the snap. Elite lacrosse players carry the same spatial awareness. Training explicit field mapping before each possession builds the vision habits that enable the fastest and most accurate decision-making.

1

Set up 6v6. Before each possession, the ball carrier is given 10 seconds to survey the field.

2

Ball carrier calls out as many player positions as they can: 'crease, top left, wing right, goalie set...'

3

On whistle, possession begins. Coach tracks whether ball carrier's passes align with the positions they identified.

4

Run 6 possessions per player. Award a team point for each accurate field-map that leads to a goal.

Goal

It's clicking when you can accurately call 9 out of 11 positions before the possession starts, you know where everyone is before you need to know it.

Helpful cues

  • Scan systematically: near side, far side, defense, offense, then attack
  • Your voice maps what your eyes see, use both together
  • The 10 seconds you spend mapping saves 40 seconds of confusion during the possession

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Only ask the ball carrier to identify two players before the possession.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Reduce pre-possession mapping time to 5 seconds.
