How it works
Demonstrate maximum effort defending a clear-path 1v1 situation where the attacker has a significant positional advantage.
What you need
- lacrosse stick
- lacrosse ball
- cones
- goal
Your focus
Effort is most visible and most impactful in situations where the player appears beaten. Training players to fight through 'lost' situations with maximum effort produces both physical saves and mental toughness.
Attacker starts at the restraining box on a straight line toward goal. Defender starts 3 steps behind.
On whistle, both sprint. Defender must make up ground and either check, block, or pressure the shot.
Partial credit if defender closes the angle enough to force an off-angle shot.
Run 8 reps. Switch roles after 4.
Helpful cues
- Effort is not about winning every rep, it's about making winning harder for your opponent
- Run through the crease, not to it
- Even a blocked exit is better than no contest
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Reduce head start to 1 step; give defender a realistic chance to beat the attacker.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add a second attacker as a pass option; defender must close and cover two threats. No account needed

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
