How it works

Develop puck control at skating speed by weaving through a cone line while maintaining consistent stickhandling.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • 6 cones
  • ice

Your focus

Combining stickhandling with skating speed forces players to use their peripheral vision and fine motor control simultaneously , a critical game skill. Cone weave training builds the automatic puck control that allows players to look up and read the ice rather than looking down at the puck. Players with efficient cone-weave stickhandling carry the puck through traffic in games naturally.

1

Set up 6 cones in a straight line, 4 feet apart.

2

Player skates through the weave while stickhandling the puck around each cone.

3

Complete two passes through the weave; turn and return.

4

Coach focuses on eyes-up skating while the hands control the puck independently.

Goal

You're there when you complete the cone weave at skating speed and the puck never loses contact with your blade between cones.

Helpful cues

  • Your eyes should be looking at the next cone, not at the puck
  • Stay in your skating lane, the puck follows your stick, not the other way
  • Smooth and controlled beats fast and messy every time

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Increase spacing to 6 feet and allow a brief pause between cones.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add speed, player must complete the weave in a target time while maintaining puck control.
