How it works

Develop an elite performance mindset by establishing and practicing a structured pre-game mental preparation protocol on ice.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice

Your focus

Elite performers in all sports have consistent pre-performance routines that prepare both mind and body for peak execution. A structured hockey pre-game protocol , combining physical warm-up, mental activation, and intention-setting , creates the optimal performance mindset before a game. Players who practice this routine make it automatic, so it functions even under the highest competitive pressure.

1

Teach the protocol: 5 minutes of technical warm-up, 2 minutes of individual visualization on ice, 1 minute of team intention-setting at center circle.

2

Practice the full protocol before every scrimmage in the final two weeks before competition.

3

Each player sets one performance intention for the scrimmage during the center circle moment.

4

Post-scrimmage review: did the player achieve their intention? How did their mindset hold through the game?

Helpful cues

  • The protocol is not superstition, it is preparation made systematic
  • Your intention focuses your mindset, vague minds play vague hockey
  • The warm-up is where your mindset starts, not the opening face-off

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Use only the technical warm-up and intention-setting for the first two weeks before adding visualization.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Require players to record their intention before the scrimmage and self-evaluate it afterward in writing, building systematic mindset tracking.
