How it works
Build a growth mindset by teaching players to analyze and learn from their mistakes during a structured passing and stickhandling drill.
What you need

- whiteboard or notepad
- ice
Your focus
Players with a fixed mindset hide from mistakes; players with a growth mindset examine them. Teaching a structured mistake-analysis habit builds the mindset that every error is an opportunity to learn , which directly accelerates skill development. Players who approach mistakes with curiosity rather than shame improve faster and more consistently.
Run a standard passing drill for 5 minutes.
When a player makes a mistake, coach blows a short whistle and asks: what happened, what would you do differently?
Player gives a 2-sentence answer; coach validates the learning without dwelling on the error.
Player immediately retries the same skill to apply the learning.
Helpful cues
- A mistake tells you something, what is it telling you right now?
- Analyze it, apply it, move on, that is the growth mindset loop
- The worst response to a mistake is pretending it did not happen
