How it works

Develop elite leadership by having players fully design and lead a 10-minute practice segment with no coach input.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • cones
  • ice

Your focus

The highest form of hockey leadership is the ability to organize, motivate, and develop teammates independently. Player-led practice builds tactical knowledge, organizational skill, and the relational authority to earn teammates' participation. Elite players who have led practice segments are more effective leaders in games because they understand what they are asking teammates to do.

1

Designate a lead player 24 hours in advance to design a 10-minute on-ice segment targeting any skill.

2

Lead player runs the session completely, sets up equipment, explains drills, monitors execution, gives coaching cues.

3

Coach observes silently and does not intervene unless there is a safety issue.

4

Post-session debrief with the full team: what did the lead player do well? What would they change?

Helpful cues

  • Prepare your words before you step on the ice, just like a real coach
  • Earn trust by knowing your content and delivering it clearly
  • A practice leader who earns respect becomes a game leader automatically

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Give the lead player a pre-built drill to run rather than designing one from scratch.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Lead player must run two different drills targeting two different skills, requiring broader tactical knowledge and leadership flexibility.

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
