How it works

Help young players practice leading a simple team stretch and skate warm-up by taking turns as captain on ice.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice

Your focus

Early leadership exposure builds communication confidence and teaches players to take responsibility for their peers. Rotating the captain role ensures all players experience leading, not just the most vocal. It also fosters a sense of shared team ownership from an early age.

1

Coach designates one player as captain for the warm-up lap.

2

The captain moves center ice and calls out the drill, one lap forward, one lap backward.

3

All teammates follow the captain's chosen pace and direction.

4

Rotate the captain role to a new player for each successive warm-up segment.

Helpful cues

  • Use your big voice so everyone can hear
  • Skate with confidence, your team is watching
  • Encourage a teammate who is struggling

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach skates beside the captain and prompts them on what to say.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Captain must also call out two passing combinations during the lap.
