How it works

Develop power play focus by running a structured passing sequence that requires sustained attention to maintain correct positioning and timing.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice

Your focus

Power play execution fails when players lose focus for even one pass , they miss a seam, take a step out of position, or fail to communicate a screen. Training sustained attention through a structured power play sequence builds the concentration habits needed to capitalize on player advantage situations. Players who focus throughout the full power play give their team the best chance to convert.

1

Set up a power play unit in the offensive zone.

2

Coach calls a specific passing sequence, A to B to C to D and shoot.

3

Power play must execute the sequence without error; any miscommunication or missed assignment requires a restart.

4

Build from 3-pass sequences to 5-pass sequences as focus improves.

Helpful cues

  • Know where you are passing before you receive the puck
  • Be present every second, not just when you have the puck
  • Focus means never being surprised by a pass arriving at your stick

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Use stationary players for the first sequence, no skating until the pattern is memorized.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a penalty kill that activates after the 2nd pass, requiring focus to complete the sequence under defensive pressure.
