How it works

Train elite-level game focus by running a 3-on-3 overtime scenario requiring absolute attention for every second of each shift.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice
  • goalie

Your focus

Overtime hockey demands a level of focus that regular-game shifts do not , every single play has immediate game-outcome consequences. Training players to be fully present and focused for every second of an OT shift builds the mental performance capacity needed to play at the highest level in the highest-stakes moments. Players who have practiced OT focus are calmer and more decisive when real overtime arrives.

1

Run a 3-on-3 overtime format on half ice with a shot clock and live goalie.

2

Before each 90-second OT shift, each player must state their one focus cue for that shift.

3

Play the shift; after, each player rates their own focus 1-5 and identifies the moment focus peaked and the moment it dipped.

4

Repeat for 4 shifts per group.

Helpful cues

  • Pick one thing to focus on each shift, not everything at once
  • When your focus dips, call it and reset within one stride
  • The player who is most focused in OT controls the outcome

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Run regular 5-on-5 with the focus debrief protocol but without OT pressure framing.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Announce a randomly assigned target focus for each player 5 seconds before their shift, they must achieve it under unexpected pressure.
