How it works
Build attention and focus by training young players to freeze instantly on a single coach signal while skating.
What you need
- hockey stick
- puck
- ice
Your focus
The ability to focus and respond to a signal while in motion is the earliest and most important hockey focus skill , it keeps players safe and allows coaching to be delivered quickly in a practice environment. Training freeze-on-signal builds the attention habit that is necessary for all subsequent instruction to be received effectively. Players who focus sharply in practice develop the game focus to read plays faster.
Players move freely around the ice with pucks.
Coach randomly blows one long whistle, players must freeze completely within 1 second.
Coach gives a brief instruction or observation, then blows a short whistle to resume.
Run for 5 minutes; celebrate players who freeze the fastest and stay frozen.
Helpful cues
- One whistle means freeze, your body stops immediately
- Eyes to the coach the moment you freeze
- When you freeze fast, everyone hears the instruction faster
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Use a visual signal rather than a whistle for players who are slow to respond to sound.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add two whistle signals, one short means change direction, one long means freeze, requiring more discriminant focus. No account needed
