How it works
Build in-game confidence by training players to attack a 1-on-1 situation with decisiveness and a committed move.
What you need
- hockey stick
- puck
- ice
Your focus
Many players hesitate in 1-on-1 situations because they lack confidence in their ability to beat a defender. Training decisive attack moves repeatedly against real defenders builds the confidence to commit fully in games. Players who practice 1-on-1 confidence develop the self-belief to be dangerous every time they have the puck with space.
Puck carrier starts at the red line; defender starts at the offensive blue line.
Puck carrier drives to beat the defender 1-on-1 using any move.
After the rep, puck carrier must verbalize what move they used and whether it worked.
Run 6 reps per player, rotating defenders to face different defensive styles.
Goal
Success is attacking the defender with a plan, not reacting to them, you decide what move you're making before you get to them.
Helpful cues
- Commit to a move, half-moves always fail
- Attack the defender's skates, not their body
- If your first move did not work, file it for next time, it will work eventually
