How it works

Develop shooting confidence under game-pressure conditions by practicing shots from high-danger areas with a countdown clock.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice
  • goalie

Your focus

Confident shooting under pressure requires both technical mastery and a stable mental state , two things that must be practiced together, not separately. Players who only shoot in no-pressure drills often tighten up in games because the conditions are completely different. Simulating pressure in practice makes the game environment feel familiar and manageable.

1

Player receives a pass from the boards and must shoot within 2 seconds on a live goalie.

2

A countdown from 3 is called aloud by teammates before each shot.

3

Player tracks their success rate across 10 shots.

4

After 10, player sets a target for the next 10 and declares it aloud to the team.

Goal

You've got it when the countdown clock doesn't change your shot, same setup, same release, same follow-through as in open practice.

Helpful cues

  • Release quick and release confident, slow shots are stopped shots
  • Your target is picked before you receive the pass
  • Own the miss, fix the next one

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Give 3 seconds per shot and remove the countdown to reduce anxiety.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Require the shot to go to a called spot, adding precision to confidence under pressure.
