How it works

Build scoring confidence by repeatedly practicing breakaway attempts in a low-pressure high-success environment.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice
  • goalie

Your focus

Breakaways are moments where confidence directly determines success , hesitation and self-doubt produce poor shots, while confidence produces decisive execution. Repeated practice against a goalie in a structured, encouraging environment builds the positive associations with breakaway situations that transfer to game confidence. Volume of reps, not perfection, is the key at this stage.

1

Players line up at center ice; each player has a puck.

2

One at a time, players skate full speed on a breakaway against the goalie.

3

Before breaking out, each player must verbalize their move.

4

Regardless of outcome, teammates cheer and coach gives one positive comment.

Goal

You're there when you attack the breakaway with a committed move instead of slowing down and hoping, pick your deke and go.

Helpful cues

  • Decide before you skate, commit to your move
  • Full speed in, not tentative
  • Whether it goes in or not, you made a decision and you went for it

Adjust the challenge
