Your focus
Compete level at young ages is about teaching the instinct to go to the puck and not give up possession without a fight. A game format reduces anxiety around physical competition and makes competing feel fun rather than threatening. Early positive experiences with competitive pressure build the foundation for aggressive compete habits at higher levels.
Place 6 pucks scattered around the neutral zone.
Split team into two groups; each group tries to collect as many pucks as possible by skating to them first.
If two players reach a puck at the same time, they must battle for 5 seconds to decide possession, no contact, stick-on-puck competition only.
Team with the most pucks at the whistle wins the round; play 4 rounds.
Goal
You've got it when you're still chasing the puck hard even when another player gets there first, you never stop moving.
Helpful cues
- Go to every puck like it's the only one left
- Compete on every loose puck, don't watch someone else get it
- When it's tied at a puck, dig harder
